Toyama and the Takayama Line are waiting for you

最終更新日:2016年10月29日

Takayama

TakayamaTakayama is an ancient city that still evokes the vibrant culture of the prominent local merchants who worked for the Kanamori clan that once ruled the Takayama Domain and whose sense of beauty carries on even today. The town sees an increasing number of international visitors each year. Within the Sanmachi district lined with old buildings, the Kami-Sannomachi area is popular for its restaurants and souvenir shops, while the Kami-Ninomachi area is experiencing a quiet revival as well for its old shops and mellow vibe.

Takayama Jinya

Takayama JinyaTakayama Jinya is a former government outpost that was established to bring the Hida Province under the direct control of the Edo Bakufu. This national historic site is the only original main structure that survives out of the sixty county representative and magistrate offices set up around the country towards the end of the Tokugawa shogunate.

Nakabashi Bridge

Nakabashi BridgeLooking over the Miyagawa River from the Nakabashi Bridge that links Sanmachi and Takayama Jinya, taking a moment to enjoy the pleasant murmuring as it flows past.

Hida-Furukawa

Hida-FurukawaThe rows of traditional, artisan-crafted wooden buildings in Hida are close to Takayama and were all under shogunate control, so many of them appear to be a continuation of the Takayama streets. The biggest difference is the scenes of daily living that seem to permeate this area. Here, you can pick up some local home-cooked favorites at the corner delicatessen, stay in a guesthouse that was once an old home, and ride your bicycle around the rural areas. Hida-Furukawa is becoming increasingly popular with guests seeking a new, more intimate kind of travel experience.

There are nearly a thousand carp swimming in the Seto channel that flows alongside the white-walled buildings housing sake breweries and more. This is one of the classic scenes that gives you a taste for life in the ancient city of Hida-Furukawa.
